ADHD and Homeopathy

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a diagnosis given to 10% of all school children in America. In 1985, 500,000 children in the USA were diagnosed with ADHD. Today there are between 5 and 7 million. In a class with 30 children between 1 and 3 children are diagnosed with ADHD.

Often parents have an idea that their child may have emotional or behavioral problems because of an erratic behavior. They had assumed that this was simply their child’s kinetic personality coupled with a developing young mind. ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder, associated with difficulty in learning, concentration, inattentive behavior, impulsiveness and

The medical community informs parents that the only way to eradicate the symptoms is by medication. Most of these medications are stimulants, which have the effect of refining focus of thought so that the child could attend to school and homework and not be a disturbance in the classroom. Possibly parents are elated to know that there is a medicine to cure the problem.

However, all drugs have side effects. Ritalin has been associated with sleeplessness, addiction, depression etc. At the beginning of the treatment the side effects can be quite serious. Besides changing the child’s personality from unruliness to docile behavior and acceptance in society, there are nausea, vomiting, mood swings and loss of appetite as well as decreased height and weight. Due to the drug’s many side effects, some parents may look for alternative ways to help their suffering children. Prompted by the innate desire to find the best solution for the child, some families find their way to homeopathy.

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine that works with the body’s innate ability to heal. Homeopathic medicines are safe, effective, holistic and gentle in their action.

Quantum physics tells us that matter and energy is one and the same thing. The speculation that homeopathic medicine works “energetically” has come about because the infinitesimal, highly diluted remedial substances used in this method of healing can produce profoundly positive constitutional changes. These positive changes are possibly the result of unobserved quantum effects. The major principle of the homeopathic system is the minimum dose, which is the premise that disease can be cured with minute quantities of homeopathic medicines. These medicines, or remedies, are found only after collecting symptoms from the entire person. This means that a person’s emotional, mental and physical states are taken into consideration and not just the spot where it hurts.

You may have treated yourself homeopathically when you are ill when you take a substance that produces in a healthy person the symptoms of your illness. For example, in many cultures raw onion and garlic are used for colds. When cutting an onion it makes your eyes and nose run with burning discharges and you sneeze. These are the same symptoms you have with a cold. In some ways homeopathy can be compared to a vaccination. However, vaccines are live viruses or bacteria. When you are treated with a homeopathic remedy, for example Quinine for malaria, Colchicine for gout or X-ray for skin cancer, you are treated with a remedy that could produce the symptoms of that ailment in a healthy person. Homeopathic remedies have no trace of a mother tincture left. The remedy is so highly diluted that one calls if an imprint of the substance used.

Homeopathy has been practiced for 200 years and is not a new treatment method or possible medical craze. My grandparents only saw homeopaths. My parents, however, went to doctors first. When the desired result did not come, inevitably, they too went to the homeopath. Most often, my family resorted to homeopathic remedies and herbs to cure themselves from colds to childhood diseases.

Homeopathy for ADHD

Based on the method in which homeopathy is used, it can be a powerful tool to treat troubled children as well as adults suffering from ADHD and other behavioral disorders. As a first aid, homeopathy can treat sleeplessness, anxiety, nervousness and hyperactivity. An overly impulsive child can be helped with a remedy that makes it stop to think first and act later. For example, there is Coffea cruda, which is made from coffee. When used as a micro dose, coffee is for sleeplessness, Chamomila is used for the hyperactive child. Arsenicum album and Argentum nitricum are used for anxiety and for those who suffer from fears. It is advisable not to change remedies too often. Let one bring about the desired result first. Sometimes one remedy acts for a long time. However, there are many other homeopathic medicines that are appropriate for these disorders depending on the presenting symptoms.

Since ADHD displays a myriad of symptoms and every person has their own unique biochemical make-up, it is recommended to seek the help of an experienced homeopathic practitioner. Parents should inform themselves about homeopathic medicines before their use. Besides, remedies should only be used as first aid. A homeopath should be consulted for constitutional treatments.
